Oftentimes students in classrooms at school miss bits of information due to absences, illnesses, travel, or other reasons. Education relies on previous knowledge to build understandings to the next level. It can be challenging for students to move on when they have gaps in their understanding. Many strong students might have gaps due to the COVID pandemic, and the challenges everyone faced during that time.
A tutor's job is to identify those gaps in understanding, and help students fill those gaps. This might be done through direct instruction, repetition and review, or through teaching self-directed learning skills. As a certificated teacher, I know how to create and design programming for students that hits the goals set out in the Alberta Program of Studies, and I have experience in finding and filling gaps in understanding.
Tutors do not need to be certificated teachers. Parents who homeschool their children are essentially acting as tutors for their children as they do self-directed learning. I would like to be able to support homeschooling parents with finding their own curricular resources, implementing their own programs, and ultimately being their children's teachers.
